King of Larsa (1894-1866), who continued the expansion of Larsa's influence that began under Gungunum. Year names tell of armed clashes in northern Babylonia. He built new canals and barrages, which not only ensured the water supply of his region , but deprived the rival city of Isin of water. At the end of his reign, according to an inscription by a later ruler, Sin-iddinam, Larsa was threatened by an invasion which only divine intervention could save. Sûmû-El is the first ruler of Larsa whose name was written with the sign for 'god' (Leick, Who's Who in the Ancient Near East, p. 159).
