Bendt Alster was born July 26, 1946. He studied Assyriology at the University of Copenhagen from 1965 to 1972 and received the doctoral degree in 1975. Bendt spent one year in Rome at the Biblical Institute (1968-69), and another (1970-71) at Harvard University studying with Thorkild Jacobsen. Bendt was visiting scholar at the University Museum, Philadelphia, in 1973, 1988-89, 1992 and again in 1993-94, as well as visiting scholar at the British Expedition to Iraq, Baghdad in 1990, and visiting scholar at the Babylonian Collection, Yale University, 1992. Bendt was external lecturer at the University of Copenhagen from 1978 until 2005.
